Stefaan Van Moerbeke 01 May 2017

It is with great sadness and regret we have to report the untimely death of Stefaan Van Moerbeke, a long time friend and benefactor of the Scottish National Flying Club, following a Road Traffic Accident in his home town of Ypres, the City of Peace in Belgium on Saturday 29th April 2017. It was in 2008 on behalf of the Ypres Burgomeister (Mayor), Stefaan contacted the SNFC via his close friend Roy Seaton and initiated the first SNFC race from Ypres in 2009 to commemorate the Scottish soldiers within the thousands of British Commonwealth soldiers who lost their lives on Belgium soil. Stefaan went on to tirelessly assist the SNFC in all aspects of continental Pigeon Racing into Scotland from assisting with weather reports to providing food and subsistence to weary convoyers and drivers. Stefaan himself donated the Ypres 'Cheri Ami Trophy' as a symbol of the vitally important contribution made by brave and gallant pigeons during World War 1. Every year Stefaan also donated the Section winners individual Trophies along with Belgian chocolates at the same race. Stefaan will be greatly missed but his legacy will live on within the annual SNFC Ypres race and the quite magnificent 'Cheri Ami Trophy' that he donated to the club.
